Lubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) has been released

Lubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) has been released. The good news is all of the default Ubuntu updates were implemented in Lxde version Ubuntu aka Lubuntu. So, there is nothing worry to update. Lubuntu is as fast as it offer since years. No need to buy heavy expensive hardware to run modern operating system and applications in a older computer. Have to remember that older computer means not older then 10 years.

System Requirements

Memory (RAM): To run flawlessly it need at minimum 1 GB of RAM to use, but 2 GB or more RAM recomended for better performance (with web-based applications).
Processor (CPU): Need at least Pentium 4, Pentium M, or AMD K8 CPU.1

By the way, we have expected to get this Lubuntu as a LXQT flavoured but developers have changed their mind. LXQT will come with Ubuntu changing it’s name as “Lubuntu Next”. It will take more time to come in front of us.

This version will be support for 3 years.

LXLE Eclectica 16.04.3 Released

LXLE is based on Lubuntu which is an Ubuntu OS using the LXDE desktop environment. It is designed to be a drop-in and go OS, primarily for aging computers. Its intention is to be able to install it on any computer and be relatively done after install. At times removing unwanted programs or features is easier than configuring for a day. Screen Saver in Linux

We may not know that there is a huge collection of screen saver available for Linux. Most of them are colorful, attractive and aesthetically beautiful. It's name is 'xscreensaver'.

This jaigantic collection could be used in any Linux distribution. All Linux variants could download this bunch with their corresponding software or application download center.

Debian based Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Linuxmint, Peppermint, Bodhilinux, AntiX, LXLE etc. could download it via 'Synaptic Package Manager'. Other Linux users could found it in 'YaST Software Management' or their own 'Software Center' or 'Package installation Center'.

According to supplied information XScreenSaver is a modular screen saver and locker for X11 desktop. This package has capability to only blank and lock computer's screen. But this screen saver could contain more than 200 screen savers with some extra download.

Add Link or Edit Main Menu in LXDE or Lubuntu

Sometimes you may ask that how do I add a custom application link or shortcut in main menu when I running Lubuntu or any LXDE based distribution? Yes, this is easy with 'LXMED' aka LX Menu Editor.

Screenshot tool in Lubuntu Lxde

There is no any default screenshot tool in Lubuntu. So, if you want to take a screenshot then you have to press 'PrtSc' button.

Taken screenshot will save into Home folder. But, if you like to get a time delay screenshot, then you have to create a handmade screenshot tool. Yes, you can create it easily with some simple command.

Lubuntu shiped with a default graphic editor named 'mtPaint'. It has a time-delayed screenshot option in the menu (FIle> Actions> Time delayed screenshot).

We can use/ create a shortcut button to activate this action. I wil tell you the easiest solution.

First of all open Leafpad, copy the codes below and save the file as 'screenshot.sh' in your home folder.

Now we have to create a application that runs our newly created shell script.

Open the following location as root.

'open current folder as root' in Tools Menu

/usr/share/applications

Now Right Click and create a blank file.

Right Click and create a new blank file

Name it 'screenshot.desktop'. Paste the codes below in this file and save. Change "YOUR_USER_NAME" before save the file.

You can change icon option if you like any icon from the folder

A shortcut icon named 'Grab Screenshot' should be placed in main menu.

You have done. Now click the shortcut button to get a time delayed screenshot. Taken screenshot now will open with 'mtPaint'.

Change or Edit Panels Digital Clock Style In Lubuntu or any LXDE based OS

I have changed the style of Digital Clock in my Lubuntu 12.04 machine. I like to get date, day, month, year, hour, minutes, seconds at a time. So, I always love to tweak my machine's digital clock format. Same method can be usable in any distribution which use Lxde Desktop Environment. You know I did it in AntiX operating system too.

To configure digital clock's format in Lubuntu you have to right click on it. A drop down menu will show you various job. Click on "Digital Clock Settings". A configuration window will open.

Change the 'Clock Format' codes as supplied below:

%a, %B, %x, %r

You can change the style of tooltip. To edit tool tip format simply paste the time codes written below in the 'Tooltip Format' field.

%B, %y %A, %x

Press 'Close' button to active the action. You can select the way you want to show the text. Bold it or not. To show 'Tooltip' only or centralize the text by clicking on radio button. You can change the codes from the list below if you like to display more information in 'Digital Clock' are in LXPanel.

%a - The abbreviated weekday name (Sun)
%A - The full weekday name (Sunday)
%b - The abbreviated month name (Jan)
%B - The full month name (January)
%d - Day of the month (01..31)
%e - Day of the month (1..31)
%H - Hour of the day, 24-hour clock (00..23)

You can use this tool Foragoodstrftime to get and create more codes which can be use to configure digital clock format in Lxde desktop environment.

Change Login Background in Lubuntu or any LXDE based OS

A default image showed as background in login prompt when computer start booting. We can change this background image in Lubuntu 12.04 easily. Configuration takes only few steps.

First of all select or create a image file which you like to show as background of login screen. Now place it in the folder below:

/usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers

Need root privilege to do this job. You can do it with opening this location with root access. To do that click on Tools in Menu. A drop down Submenu will open. Click on "Open Current Folder as Root". Now you can able to paste the image file here.

I guess you are using 'PCManFm', so take an another tab and open another folder as written below:

/etc/lightdm

Double click the file named 'lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf' or open this file with 'Leafpad'.

Now, change the background option. Change the location (If you place the image file on another folder) or change the filename only. Because you place the image file in the default directory.

Changes will be take effect after a simple logout.

Change close, maximize, minimize button position right to left in lubuntu

Changing 'Window Buttons Position' to the left side of the title bar is common in Mac OS. This great style first introduced in other operating system done by Ubuntu 10.04. From the beginning this feature get popularity very quickly. I think changing position of the window title bar buttons (close, maximize, minimize) make my works faster and easier. So, when I started to use Lubuntu 12.04, I am looking for this tweak for PCManFM. I found a solution in my favorite 'Lubuntu Tips' blog.

To do this tweak you should open lubuntu configuration file (lubuntu-rc.xml) and edit a line of code.

Open terminal and copy-paste the following line

leafpad ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml

'lubuntu-rc.xml' file will open with text editor 'Leafpad'. Search for the following line of code in this file. It wil be about 45-50 lines from the top.

<titlelayout>NLIMC</titlelayout>

Here, every alphabet represent a corresponding icon like I wrote below.

N: Window icon
L: Window label (Window title).
I: Iconify
M: Maximize
C: Close
S: Shade (Roll up/ Roll down)
D: Omnipresent (On all desktops).

So, if you love to change the title bar icon position so rearrange the alphabet as your desire.

To change window buttons position in my lubuntu (LXDE) computer, I simply change the alphabet order as below.

<titlelayout>CMILSN</titlelayout>

Now, you have to Logout and Login computer to view new button positions.

How to add shortcut icon on panel in Lubuntu Lxde

Look at the image titled 'Icons on top panel in lubuntu'. There are 20 icons working as launcher of corresponding application. Sometime we thought that creating launcher or shortcut icon on panel in lxde is not easy. I don't think so. If you love to know my technics, I would like to explain it now.

First of all create a "filename.desktop" in Applications (/usr/share/applications) folder pointed your desired software.
Now go directly to Panels folder using this link /home/USERNAME/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/panels.
I have two panel configuration files in this folder. I open 'top' panels configuration file with 'LeafPad'.
You have to add a launcher onto the panel before adding some code.
Look at the Plugin section where "type = launchbar" is written.
Write the code below and change its direction according to your system.

Here, I create a 'firefox14.desktop' file in applications folder using the codes below before.

Now restart Lubuntu session and login back. You should get a new shortcut link in top panel now.

I added more then 10 shortcut link in launcher section onto the 'top panel'.

Some Folders to know in Lubuntu

Today I am writing about some folder which we can remember for further tweeks on Lubuntu (An lxde based distro from Ubuntu). In my side I am running Lubuntu 12.04 in some poor hardware. No problem at all. I am exploring and discovering many interesting things day by day. Using Lxde is really fast and funny. I like to write Lubuntu / Lxde experience in near future regularly.
I found some folders in Lubuntu which are used simultaneously everyday. I am writing their name in this post to just know about. Please help me to add more folders name in this post if you know.

/home/USERNAME

This is your 'Home' folder. Your documents, music, pictures, videos, downloads etc. are live here.

If you press "Ctrl+h" in this folder's window, all hidden files will be visible.

/home/USERNAME/.config

This is the folder where your computers configuration files will be preserved.

/home/USERNAME/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/panels

You can make 4 panels in lxde desktop. Created panels and added shortcut links and there configuration files are saved here.

/usr/share/applications

This folder is for applications shortcut file. (.desktop file)

/usr/share/icons

You can get icon from this folder. Even download icons should extraced here.

/var/cache/apt/archives

All download applications, tools, libraries, dependency, installer, .deb files are saved here. After certain installation or update you could copy all files from here and burn them in a cd for further use. You can convey installed software application in this way and install them in your friends computer.

Two Lubuntu and Xubuntu blog to explore

Today I am going to tell you something about two blogspot blogs. Day by day LXDE and XFCE based distributions are coming infront of main stream Linux world. Many of us starting to love these lightweight operating systems. But there are not much blog which published tips and tricks about these desktop environments. Recently I found two blogspot blogs which are not official but publishing many valuable, informative, importent tips and tricks about LXDE and XFCE.

I don't know the man behind this blog. But I honor her/his effort to teach us about Lubuntu and LXDE. I learned many tips from this blog. Create 'Documents' 'Desktop' 'Downloads' 'Music' 'Video' folder shortcut icon on LXDE desktop

In this post I will tell you how to create 'Documents' shortcut icon or launcher in desktop on LXDE based Linux distribution like Lubuntu, Salix, Peppermint ,Archlinux, Opensuse, Fedora, Gentoo, Vectorlinux, Zorin, Porteus etc. Here is the simplest method.

Open terminal from Main menu or pressing "Alt+Ctrl+t". Run the command below. No need to use 'sudo'.

cd Desktop ln -s ~/ Documents

Press Enter. A 'Documents' folder shortcut icon/ launcher has been created in your LXDE desktop.

In this way you can create 'Desktop' 'Downloads' 'Music' 'Video' folder shortcut icon on any LXDE desktop.

Home Documents Desktop Icon on Lubuntu LXDE

Creating a Home or Documents desktop shortcut icon in LXDE based os is very easy. Just create an empty file in desktop and put some code their and save. It's done! You have created Home and Documents desktop icon in LXDE based os like Lubuntu, Peppermint, Salix, LinuxMint Lxde etc.

Downloading with 'wget' in Lubuntu

A slim download application has been added in Lubuntu 12.04 by default. It's name is 'wget'. 'WGET' can download from anywhere in the world of web. The great information about this terminal based application is that it support resuming. Retrieving files from the web with this light/ minimalist application is really funny and helpful for low memory. But you can use "Uget", if you do not like terminal based application. I am downloading latest famous Ubuntu magazine 'Full circle magazine (issue 62)' with wget on the above screenshot. Here is some talks about 'wget' which I found at 'Synaptic package manager'.

You know I am using Lubuntu12.04 (LXDE based Ubuntu 12.04). After getting the very first desktop an warning message has displayed it's face to me. The message said:

The language support files for your selected language seem to be incomplete. You can install the missing components by clicking on "Run this action now" and follow the instructions. An active internet connection is required. If you would like to do this at a later time, please use Language suport instead (click the icon at the very right of top bar and select "System settings...-> Language Support").

I have not understand this message, because I have not select any language which can not be supported with any operating system. I selected English everywhere. You may check my other post called "Lubuntu 12.04 installation screenshots". There is nothing any selection which may disturb me anyway. So, I did not press "Run the action now" button. I just press "Close" to remove this warning message.

You know that Lubuntu 12.04 has been published and ready to download several weeks ago. According to Ubuntu wiki Lubuntu 12.04 is not supported for 5 years. They said:

Lubuntu 12.04 is not an LTS (5 year support), but a 'standard' release, supported for 18 months. This is simply due the fact there is insufficient 'man-power' to commit to 5 years of support.

Though I have install it in my machine. I have fall in a financial problem and have to sell my intel duel core system. Now I have bought an older Pentium 4 processor based machine. Mother board brand is StarSonic ZX-1945LM4. Ram is DDR2 1GB. I know it don't have much power, but I have no choice. What a bad luck of me.
I will testing this machine with some lighter OS. First of all I am trying Lubuntu 12.04. Here is the snapshots of its installation process.

You may know that Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) Published to download. But there are more Ubuntu derivatives which you can taste. They are Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Lubuntu and Xubuntu. All distributions are now have 12.04 version. All are LTS (Long term support). From this version ubuntu and its all derivatives will get security and other support for 5 years. I think this distributions might be helpful for you if you want some different essence according to your choice, working habit and hardware support. Here I am explaining one by one.

Peppermint One 01042011 Respin Review [ScreenShots]

New spin of 'Peppermint one' operating system has been released some days ago. [Newslink]. I missed the news. It published on 04 January 2011. last weak I start to download new Peppermint one. Today it completed. I run 'Peppermint-One-01042011.iso' with the help of Virtual Box. Test different.
At the news post on Peppermint os homesite they said that only some change has been implied in this new respin. I am just pasting some text from the announcement post.

The default kernel has been updated to 2.6.35 in order to stay more current regarding hardware support and to match the kernel in Peppermint Ice.

The Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) has been completely removed from this edition in order to help with performance and to increase application modularity.

The default screenshot application has been replaced with PyShot, a simple Python/GTK application contributed by our longtime friend and supporter, Ikey Doherty.

Some low level utilities have been updated such as the GNU Coreutils to version 8.8, the Samba file sharing framework to 3.5.6, and others.

Some user level applications have also received updates such as the PCManFM file manager to 0.9.8, LXTerminal to 0.1.9, and Firefox to 4.0b8

But I think they forget to mention a great change found on this new release. They said it only in half sentence at last number. This is about PCManFM file manager. Now PCManFM desktop icons are movable. So you can rearrange desktop icons just dragging it anywhere. Position of icons can be saved and restored. Day by day LXDE are becoming more popular for its various kind of feature. This is the newest one. I believe users like me feel more exciting with this new ability of pcmanfm.

After downloading and setting up in VirtualBox I found the screenshots published below one by one.

PCLinuxOS LXDE Review and Screenshots

Some days ago PC Linux OS has destroyed my everything, when I install it on a hard disk. None of any Linux distribution behave bad like this way with me before. Though, I wanted to test the flavour of this so called famous Linux distribution. I download several variant like

I run them on 'Oracle VM Virtual Box'. I am really impressed to viewing the nice colour combination of this operating system. I agree that developers has a colourful mind. But, what happened next, I will tell you later. Here, I am sharing some screenshot of 'PCLinuxOS LXDE 2010'.

Install LXDE into Ubuntu

I have install LXDE on Ubuntu 10.10. LXDE stands for 'Lightweight X Desktop Environment. This desktop environment is faster then Gnome and KDE desktop. It can run on older machines or on low end/ older hardware based computer. It has many difference then other desktop. Very speedy. Although development is on going process, many operating system publish their releases using LXDE. I use Lubuntu and Peppermint os many times and fall in love. Day by day this little desktop environment grub attention of many distro.

If you tended to test LXDE then know some little information first.

At least 47 new packages need to download.
It will take only 14.7 MB to download.
When you install, it will take 43.7 MB of extra space.

If you really like to try LXDE. Then use Synaptic Package Manager or Ubuntu Software Center. Run any of them and search with keyword "LXDE". Select all dependencies to download. Your new lightweight desktop environment depends on these dependencies to work properly.

You can install Lxde using ubuntu software center. I use synaptic to install. After completing install, I feel some curious to check ubuntu software center. I discovered that I did not install 'Task Manager'. So I install this application from USC.

I install LXDE task manager later from ubuntu. This is very easy now.
After completing download and install logout your computer and sellect LXDE session from the popup menu on bottom bar.

When I get a first jump on LXDE, I really surprise to see a huge number of software installed. Then I realise that Gnome desktop applications are available on this session too.
