Unrar rar files in Ubuntu Linux

unrar unzip rar archive in ubuntu linuxNormally there is no to feel any hesitation about zip file in Ubuntu Linux. Any kind of zip file can be unzip/ extract easily in Ubuntu Linux. If you got any .7z file that can be uncompress or unzip easily with 7zip. There are an another format of zip file. It's call rar file. Usually in windows you need winrar to handle this kind of compressed file. Ubuntu did not come with rar file/ rar archive support by default. So you need to install a little application via synaptic package manager to extract/ uncompress/ unzip/ unrar/ open a rar archive.
unzip unrar uncompress rar files with unrar application ubuntu linux
Go to System> Administration> synaptic package manegar. Now search with the keyword "rar". You will get some results about uncompressing tools for rar archive file.

Look at the image (Click for larger image). I found rar, unrar, p7zip-rar, unrar-free, xarchiver etc in Synaptic package manager search result.

I did not install 'rar', because it is non free program. You must register it after 40 days of use. This powerful tool can handle multiple volume archives and damage protection. It can also create SFX-archives. This feature-rich program is not for us. We are free program user. Can not buy any software.

I did not choose 'xarchiver', because it requires 7823 kB of extra space to install.
'p7zip-rar' is a non-free rar module for p7zip.

I install 'unrar'. It is an unarchiver for .rar files. Unrar can extract files from .rar archives. If you want to create .rar archives, install package rar, then it will help you to do your job.

I will install 'unrar-free', but Unrar-free can extract files from .rar archives. But, can't handle some archives in the RAR 3.0 format, only the non-free "unrar" package can do that.

install .bin file in ubuntu Linux

I am using Ubuntu Linux 10.10 in my machine. Today I got a game (Lugaru). This is a .bin file. Now I need to install it in my Ubuntu machine. But I don't know how to install .bin file in ubuntu linux. I searched with Google and found some result.

Using terminal or shell, this kind of .bin file can be easily install within 2 or 3 command. Look at the command below to know about installing, handling or managing a .bin file.

Go into a terminal and run the command. You should know the directory where the .bin file is.
chmod a+x name_of_file.bin
Now run the command below in terminal shell
sudo ./name_of_file.bin
This way you can install any kind of file containing .bin extension, such "jdk-1_5_0_08-linux-i586.bin" or "lugaru-linux-x86-1.0c.bin".

I found this tips at Ubuntu Forum.org.

I got an another kind of tips at Linux forum,
open a terminal and run this:
chmod +x file.bin
./file.bin
I did not test this command. But I wish this might be helpfull when I really need it.

Best free zip-archive tool in the world

I just got a proof of this question: Which is the best zip tool.

If anybody search for the best archiver, compression utility or zip tool for Ubuntu linux or windows, he or she must be point to only one famous and most popular archiver in the world, the 7zip. You do not need to believe my word. Just search google or yahoo or bing or any other engine with any compression, zip, archiver type keyword and get the result. If you do not use any keyword like '7zip', '7z' in search field, though you will get the first result positioned only for 7-Zip. I know this information and use 7zip for some years both on windows and ubuntu. Today I got a proof of 7zip's great performance.
us afghan war document folderFolder sizeAfghan War Diary 2004-2010' from Wikileaks. This giant archive is full of huge hidden documents. Afghan War Diary 2004-2010 folder contain 88,095 items, and weight totaling 3.5 GB.

Here is some mathematic:
Wikileaks sharing this file as 7z format. File size 75 MB. (http://leakmirror.wikileaks.org/file/straw-glass-and-bottle/afg-war-diary.html.7z) My 'downloader for x' showing the size is 78168057 byte. After extracting this file it took 3.5 GB space in your harddisk. I compress this folder as zip format. And found that this zip file weight 841.2 MB (882047410 bytes). What a difference between the compression rate of 7z and zip format. Whares 7z own only 75 MB but zip format take 841.2 MB.Afghan us war 2004-2010 documents zip fileWhen I understand the differences between zip format compression and 7z format compression. I did not take seconds to make the decision that: Which is the best free compression tool in the world? My vote must go to 7zip software, a powerful compression utility.

Ubuntu 10.04 goes hang

Recently I was trying to install an operating system in a usb drive. Using default "Startup Disk Creator" from System> administration. I am wishing to install Peppermint ice Os on a pen drive. But Ubuntu goes hang for a long time. I have waited for at least 15 minutes, but it still did not respond anymore.

This kind of hazard is really rare in Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu for 2 years. But face this kind of problem only for 2 times. This is second time I am stack at Ubuntu machine.

I don't know why Ubuntu goes hang during startup disk creation.

My internet speed variation

I am downloading 'Free Mega Game Pack for Linux' with 'Transmission Bittorrent client'. Suddenly I feel curious about my internet speed. So I look at 3 info source and found 3 type of result.

At first I look at 'Transmission'
It is telling that my My download speed is 16.3 KB/s

Then I look at my 'NetSpeed'. It showing that my internet speed is download:26.9 KiB/s

Now, I open the 'Device Details' on Net speed. It is said that my to download speed is 32.0 KiB/s.

I am confused about this speed variation. I don't know which is correct.

Extract or uncompress 7z file in ubuntu

7zip best compression uncompression tool ubuntu linux7z file support do not come default with ubuntu. But with a simple way we can get it. It is (7z file extract (uncompress) or compress files in 7z formating tool) available in default "Ubuntu Software Center".

Search with letters '7z' and you will go directly to the 7 zip page.
Here it wrote:
p7zip is the Unix port of 7-Zip, a file archiver that archives with very high compression ratios.

p7zip-full provides:
  • /usr/bin/7za a standalone version of the 7-zip tool that handles 7z archives (implementation of the LZMA compression algorithm) and some other formats.
/usr/bin/7z not only does it handle 7z but also ZIP, Zip64, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM, ISO and DEB archives. 7z compression is 30-50% better than ZIP compression.
  • p7zip provides 7zr, a light version of 7za, and p7zip a gzip like wrapper around 7zr.
p7zip website is http://p7zip.sourceforge.net/

You can download and install p7zip from terminal. Type the command below:
sudo apt-get install p7zip
p7zip has no any link or entry in menu. But if you right click a folder then you will get a list with .7z format. You can use this compression format from here.

Use "p7zip". Because it is free and open source.
