Use Global Menu on Ubuntu 10.04

Ubuntu 10.10 netbook global menuRecently Mark Shuttleworth announce a new feature for Ubuntu 10.10 version. It will appear in only on netbook version. This feature won't be available on desktop version. Name of this new feature is "Global Menu".

Mark shuttleworth said on his blog:
We’re going to put the menu in the panel on the netbook edition of Ubuntu, and not on the desktop edition, because that’s where the screen real-estate is most precious. There are outstanding questions about the usability of a panel-hosted menu on much larger screens, where the window and the menu could be very far apart. Those questions are greatly diminished in the netbook environment, by definition.

Also, the netbook edition has a reduced application load. That will reduce the number of applications we need to get this working on.

However, it will be straightforward to use this on your desktop too, if you want, and we’d encourage people to try with that configuration. The more testing we have early on, the better we’ll understand how it works with different applications. It will be easy to add to the standard desktop panel for people who want to try it out, or prefer to work that way.
On this blogpost Mark explain everything about this 'Netbook Global Menu". He just want to make it clear that why this kind of menu is need on netbooks. Netbook computer has a very limited vertical size on screen. Standard is 1024×600. There is no problem about widh but vertical space is too short that developer need to think more. At last the confirm a solution. They add a 'Global Menu'.

Global Menu is a kind of Mac OS X like globally-shared menu bar. Which will use for applications launched in desktop session. This is currently only available for Gnome.

Though this 'Global menu' is only for netbooks and will release in Ubuntu 10.10 version, you can start to use it right now.

First add the repository in you system with this command in terminal
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:globalmenu-team/ppa
Than apply the command below for Karmic and Lucid
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu
Remember that this Global Menu is not that which Mark shuttlworth said in his blogpost. This application already running and developing by Ubuntu community. It's name is Gnome2 Global Manu. It has some limitation.
  • It will not work in Firefox and Open Office
  • It will not display window title and controls.

How to Install Newer onto Older

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS final release is going to publish tomorrow. I know you all Linux/ Ubuntu lovers are waiting for that special moment. After announcement every open source and ubuntu enthusiast will download the newer version and install in their system. I will do same, but thinking the correct method. My asking to myself is 'how do I install newer ubuntu?' I am using Ubuntu 9.10 now. My home folder is full of valuable data. I don't want to lose them all. I know partitioning in Linux. But as a new user I don't know how to install newer Ubuntu 10.04 onto older Ubuntu 9.10? I know that their is a fine solution on this topic. But for last days I cannot remember that way. Some minutes ago I found the way that I can erase older ubuntu but my home folder will be safe.

The solution: At a partitioning stage, I will select 'manual partition' then select root to my older root, swap to older swap and home to the older home folder. I will select 'format' for 'root' and 'swap' partion, not in 'home' partition.

Then newer ubuntu will delete all the information of older ubuntu but 'home' folder will stay intact and safe. On install process installer will not touch 'home' partition because I did not give permission to delete files from it. I just say installer to use it as a home folder. I think I am right. Do you have any suggestion?

NetGator is a dofollow blog

Dear friends, Today I made my blog 'Dofollow' blog. You may know that backlink is very important for any blog or website in search engine ranking. If anyone want to make his/ her blog to get top position in any search engine then his/ her blog must have some dofollow backlink from other site. I notice that I got some visitors from search engines everyday. But most of them do not comment. I know most of you are know about blogger.com blogs commenting policy. Dofollow attributes are disable by default in blogger.com blog. It is important for fight against spam comment. I also know spammers power a lot. Though I decided to make my blog as a 'Dofollow blog'.

I make 'dofollow' in two section.
  1. If you make a post about my blog and give me a link back. That will apear in that corresponding postpage and you will get a dofollow linkback.
  2. In comment form, if you leave any link that won't get any dofollow link. It is for protect spamcomment. But if you write your site URL in comment that will get a 'dofollow' link.
So friends, if you want to get a dofollow link to your blog then comment more and more and write posts about my blogposts and linkback to me. Your give me link I will give you 'dofollow' link.

I have made changes in these area:
  1. <a expr:href='data:comment.authorUrl' rel='external, follow' target='_blank'><data:comment.author/></a>
  2. <a expr:href='data:backlink.url' rel='external, follow' target='_blank'><data:backlink.title/></a>

I have changed my contact form

wufoo email me contact formAfter starting this blog, I have add a contact form in this page. I used 'Wufoo" to create a contact form. But today I have changed my provider.

Last day one of my friend said that he just send a mail to me and I did not answer her yet. She is very angry to me for my not reply. I am astonised. What is she said? I thought did she really send me any mail using my blog's contact form? I checked that form by myself sending a fake email. But alas! She is write and I am wrong. 'Wufoo' did not send me any mail. That means 'wufoo' contact form is not working? Why? What's the reason? Is it for that I am a free user? If so, then they did not done any fare job to me. Because I did not found any such kind information that they will not send mail to me if I am a free user.

I log on to 'wufoo' site and did not found any mail if they want free users to log in to read mails. No. There was no any mail waiting for me. Even there is no any options or help page which describe my problem.

So, I decided to through out 'wufoo' from my site. Actually 'wufoo' has many nice feature and colorful control panel. I liked them all. And want to write a post about them. But they done unfair to me. They don't like free users. They don't want free blogger to use their form. They should write it clearly in bold text in their website. Even they have not any trial period for their free users.

Today, I go to http://www.emailmeform.com site and made a Email Me form for my blog. I add it into my blogs Contact Page and working nice. You may check it sending me a mail.

I am very happy with the service of 'emailmeform'. I will write a post about them as soon as possible.

THANK YOU

Thank you for your mail. I will read your mail very shortly. I always try to answer every mail I get from my blog reader. Please allow me some days to mail back.

Now you may write a mail again using this Contact Page
or go directly to the Home page.

Thank's for staying with me.

Lubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 Was Released

I am a real let guy. LXDE based ubuntu distribution Lubuntu 10.04 beta 02 was published 12 April. But I did not post on this great news. What a fool I am? Yes, I am a lazy person too. So, can not check latest information on time.

You know that LXDE (Lightweight x11 desktop environment) is a very fast desktop environment. It is really extremely fast performing and energy saving desktop environment. So, it support low hardware based computer like older, netbook etc.

Canonical (UBUNTU) thought that if they build a distribution based on LXDE, that will be popular to low end user. So they made a variation named "LUBUNTU". 12 April 2010 was the date of Lubuntu 10.04 beta 2 release date.

What changes were made after beta 1? On mailing list I have found some changes are:
== New stuff since Beta 1 ==
* Auto-login at install time
* Support encrypted home directory
* Up-to-date lxdm, libfm and pcmanfm2

== Specific Lubuntu changes ==
Lubuntu still contains modifications not available in the official
repository, you can see them in the Lubuntu PPA [1] :
- New pcmanfm2 and libfm (LP: #523433)
- lubuntu-default-settings with pcmanfm2 support
- Fix for blurry shutdown-icon from elementary-icons (LP: #527345)
- Autologin support in ubiquity (LP: #546445)
- New lxdm
Remember that this version is not for regular use. It is still beta now. Use it only for testing purpose.

Nested Labels are enabled at Gmail

Nested Labels at Gmail inboxGmail blog has published and announcement. The said that nested label feature is now enebled in Gmail. Here is a snapshot at the left side. How to get it in Gmail inbox? If you like to use it, go to the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, and look for "Nested Labels". Now enable it and click "Save."

Now it is time to create some label. Name label with slashes (/) to make it the child of another. As example, let's say you wanted to create a simple hierarchy with a "Home" label, and inside it a "Members" and a "Jobs" label. Just create three labels with the following names:

Home
Home/Members
Home/Jobs

If you want, you can then create "Home/Members/Kids," "Home/Pets," etc.
In Gmail blog official said that :
You can create complex hierarchies of labels if that's the way you like to organize your mail, and you can expand/collapse labels to save space. You'll always be able to tell whether a given label contains unread messages in its collapsed child labels by looking at whether it's bold or not.
Read more tweaking at Gmail blog.

Search engine changed in Ubuntu 10.04

You may know that some months ago canonical official said that upcoming Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) search engine will be "Yahoo" instead of "Google". But now they have changed their mind. An official announcement said that:
Each release we determine the best default web browser and the best default search engine for Ubuntu. When choosing the best default search provider, we consider factors such as user experience, user preferences, and costs and benefits for Ubuntu and the browsers and other projects that make up Ubuntu. Up until Ubuntu 9.10 these defaults have always been Firefox and Google. Earlier in the 10.04 cycle I announced that we would be changing the default search provider to Yahoo!, and we implemented that change for several milestones.

However, for the final release, we will use Google as the default provider. I have asked the Ubuntu Desktop team to change the default back to Google as soon as reasonably possible, but certainly by final freeze on April 15th.

It was not our intention to "flap" between providers, but the underlying circumstances can change unpredictably. In this case, choosing Google will be familiar to everybody upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 and the change will only be visible to those who have been part of the development cycle for 10.04.
Thank you Mark. I am a Google lover too.

That announcement has been published here.

Ubuntu mascots image and code names from first to last

We know that Ubuntu Linux is the one of the popular Linux distribution in the world. It started it journey since 2005. After first release Ubuntu is making history again and again. In the desktop computing everybody use Windows. Linux is better in security and durable, stability but there is no much easy graphical support in here. Ubuntu change the tradition. It makes a better and easy to understand desktop. So a general user like me can understand what a Linux power is. Really I wanted to use linux since 2002. But everything looks very abracadabra and hard to do. I know there is a famous distribution name Red Hat Linux. There are also SUSE, Mandrake (Mandriva) and so on. I tried them all. But there is no any community support on those linux. So when I stag in a simple problem, I did not get any help from anybody. When I meet with Ubuntu and its community I realize that what makes it popular. So I started to use Ubuntu and still love on it.

From beginning Ubuntu use two word codename and select a animal as it's mascot. Here is the all mascot images from the first one to last upcoming release.
